Can we be real ?
And Yes, Compararitis is a word. Stop getting distracted.
When we hear something major about someone either in our lives or on social media, we automatically mirror it against our own life or accomplishment(s).
C O M P A R A R I T I S: An affliction of comparing oneself to images and lifestyles depicted on social media websites and life as well. Symptoms range from staring at other’s green grass instead of yours, saying yasss to other’s successes but doing the bare minimum to get yours, drooling, desiring someone else’s life, envying, and much more…
Antonym of compararitis: Just plain being inspired & using that motivation to do better.
We’ve all been there. Compararitis. One click on the ‘gram icon (instagram for the old heads) and boom, it’s battle of the I’m-fabulous-and-close-to-perfect(ly filtered) pictures in perfect locations and perfect captions. Care free smiles, fierce angles, perfect make-up, expensive looking clothes, amazing following, and you’re sitting there like “I pale in comparison”.
But you don’t.
Perspective is E v e r y t h i n g.
Purpose is Key.
Timing is so necessary.
Remember these cures to compararitis as I help you through your scrolls and trolls.
I got you best possies!
Perspective. It’s easy (so easy) to get caught up in something that is carefully curated to send a message. Most of these pages are selling a product or image. Most of the individuals do actually put time and effort and L O T S of money into their brand.
I know a blogger (who gave me permission to talk about this) who gets her income through the number of clicks and purchases to the brand sites she represents. Some months, her check is over $2,000 and other months she barely gets to $500. She embodies fabulousness but in reality, she’s doing her best to get a steady income and more sponsorship.
All … That … Glitters … Ain’t ……. okay you get it. let’s move on.
Perspective. If you are not ready for that type of life, pull the brakes on your thoughts before you find yourself in comparison lane. Remember that famous oldie but goody; Cut Your Coat According To Your Size. Or Pockets. Yeah…. It applies here. Don’t go looking for that fabulous Chloe Bag with an H&M wallet, love. And even if you had it, come on… Have you paid off all your other credit card bills? saved some money? given to a local charity? I’m just saying. The right perspective will have you checking your priorities.
Don’t get caught up, love.
And even If you are ready for that type of life, are you going to take time to study your craft (not only theirs!), your brand, your passion, your resources and work to get to your audience?
P e r s p e c t i v e: a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view
Next is PURPOSE! I’m literally about to give away my browsing secret !
I have to go on social media with a purpose. I’m not just out here looking for what Sally or JimBob posted. Nah. Oh I’ll scroll, I gotta support my people, but its super fast cuz I’m on a timer. I have a group on social media with some of my close friends and its strictly to send all funny and hilarious memes, videos, or posts. I love it. With my husband, we send each other encouraging and hilarious posts. Personally I LOVE looking up my favorite bloggers and getting inspiration on outfits, interior design, fitness, organization, and mental pick me ups for my day. Then I’ll finally round up with my power housers like Stephen Furtick or BibleLockScreens and I’m OUTTT!
*never leave anywhere on a negative note*
P u r p o s e: the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists
LASTTTT is TIMING!!
T i m i n g: the choice, judgment, or control of when something should be done
Aye yo… you should see yourself scrolling on social media. No seriously, one time I caught a co-worker in zombie-like fashion for over 10 minutes, walked behind him and literally ma dude was transfixed by the ‘gram **insert sound of baby laughing hysterically** lol!!! Bent neck and all….
Y’all gotta set a TIMER or something… what’s it going to be? 10 minutes, 15 minutes, GO! when that buzzer goes off, that’s it. Close the APP. Go outside. Take a Deep breath. Look at the big wide earth God made. Yeah, the same one that the person in the picture you were staring at was BUSY ENJOYING….. *sigh*
My dear, GO and LIVE!
I love my husband. He can go on social media fasts for long periods with zero cares. Me, I’m not eh quite there yet. But I’m working on a total of an hour a day….cut up in 15 minute increments. Sometimes it goes over by
1 hour a couple of minutes. What? I didn’t say I was perfect, homie.
But really, we have got to break away from the hold that is social media and really be PRESENT for the LIFE that is OURS. There is sooo much to do. Yes yes, come back and share your amazing vacation and adventure pictures and your love and your yummy and artistically displayed food and hilarious friends. But when you’re done, return to your life. It’s waiting for you.
You can cash me outside,
Here are some verses I found on biblereasons.com that can help greatly;
Each of you must examine your own actions. Then you can be proud of your own accomplishments without comparing yourself to others. Assume your own responsibility.
1 Timothy 6:6-8
Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
